In Borneo Sarawak we call this beaded baskets “Anjak Tali”. Some prefer to call it “ajat” while some “anjat”. Sarawak derives from huge number of tribes so it is possible to say that the pronunciation of this unique piece differ from one tongue to another.
During our ancestor’s time, it is a basket useful for carrying forest gathers, usually fruits and vegetables. There are few types of anjak, some are made from rattan and some made from beads.
Each design carries their own meaning and the commonly used are the ones that can banish evil spirits especially while ancestors go out to the forest. These beaded basket are special and only used during festivals. As it is beaded, which requires tremendous details; it is regarded as something precious and dear to our hearts. Measures height is around 20cm/8”, the base is around 11cm/4.5”. The opening is around 9cm/ 3.5”.
